Motivation Conference (MC) “step-by-step” outreach Script (:
1. Introduce yourself!
a. “Hey! My name is (name), I graduated from (name) high school in (graduation year), and I am a (#) year from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
2. Explain why you are calling, introduce MC
a. Motivation Conference is a non-yield outreach program put on by members of the Asian & Pacific Islander Student Alliance. MC is a 2 1/2-day conference that targets Asian American/ Pacific Islander (AAPI) high school students from under resourced and under represented communities. A non-yield outreach program is a program that outreaches to students who have not been accepted into the university. MC targets AAPI high school students who have not thought about higher education as an option, or do not feel that higher education is a space for them. For 2 1/2 days MC will allow these students to experience ways to express themselves, learn about more their identity, and see higher education as a realistic and obtainable goal through various workshops.
i. This can be shortened down/condensed as long as it is clear that:
1. The conference is 2 ½ days at UCSC
2. We are targeting AAPI youth from under resourced and under represented communities & that that school/ program/ etc has been identified as a school/program/ etc that can benefit from the conference

2. A chaperone is needed for safety purposesc. Let them know that we will be in contact with them about pre-registration, and deadlines
5. Now, they might have a few… or a lot of questions. Here are a few questions you may be asked:
a. How long is the conference?
i. 2 ½ Days. Thursday – Saturday afternoon
b. How much does it cost to attend?
i. The Conference is FREE!
c. I have AP testing that weekend.
i. If you are taking AP classes, you are probably already on “the college track.” MC is targeted towards students who aren’t enrolled in AP class, and in some cases attend schools where there aren’t any AP classes.
d. ** I don’t identify as “Asian” or “Pacific Islander,” but I’m interested in attending MC. **
i. ** If there is an individual that says this, have them contact the COORDINATORS via e-mail (mc14.ucsc@gmail.com) or phone (831-459-1744). AS SOON AS POSSIBLE **
e. Who is putting on the conference?
i. A number of dedicated UCSC under-graduate students plan and put together the conference. The volunteers make decisions like who to outreach to, what type of workshops, to what kind of food will be served. Logistics of the conference are handled by the three coordinators, 2 interns, and advisor.
f. Can individuals who attended MC in the past attend?
i. If you attended MC in the past and are interested in attending again, we ask that you allow others who have not been on the conference to attend. If you would like to VOLUNTEER for MC, the coordinators are currently working on a way to get previous participants involved – either a volunteer or workshop facilitator. However, as a participant or volunteer, you will still need to fill out all necessary paperwork.
g. Who decides on the chaperone?
i. If it’s a school, the students are responsible to find a teacher to be their sponsor. If it’s a program/ organization, usually the facilitator from that space becomes the sponsor.
h. What if we can’t find a chaperone?
i. You will be provided with a chaperone. The chaperone will be a UCSC student, either a 3rd or 4th year (who is at least 21-years-old). Students will get UCSC-chaperone information as soon as the information becomes available.
i. What kind of things will I need to bring?
i. In the pre-registration packet there will also be a list of items that students NEED to bring.
1. a general list:
a. Sleeping bag, pillow(s)
b. Toiletries (shampoo, body soap, lotion, etc)
c. Change clothesi. 2 days, 2 nights—sleeping clothes
ii. Bring layered clothingj. Where will we be sleeping?
i. Students and chaperones will be sleeping in college LOUNGES.
k. Why can’t we sleep in dorm rooms?
i. Although we would like to house students in actual dorm rooms, UCSC does not have the kind of facilities or the space to house the number of students MC hosts. Also, the process to housing students at SC isn’t easy
