MC Intern Qualifications

(IMPORTANT: These qualifications and description of the MC intern are specific for MC14. The qualifications may change from MC to MC. Also the power to hire an MC intern lies with the MC coordinators ONLY. No outside party may force upon the coordinators an intern at any time before, during or after the conference.)

Qualifications/ Description:

· Learn how to work effectively with coordinators (we’re practically going to be one big MC family! yay! mm well, what we mean by “learn” is that it does take time to gain and build trust. and this is a two way street of work.)

· Personal check-ins and supporting committee members: being a support system (so during Spring Quarter committees will start to meet outside the MC volunteer meetings, and one of the MC cos– or all– or the MC intern will have check-ins with various committees. the purpose of these check-ins is to see how the committees are doing, if they’ve set any deadlines and if they did are they being met/ on the way to being met. do they need anything? do they need purchase orders to X,Y,Z? etc.)

· Weekly meetings with coordinators (we want to know how you’re doing with whatever tasks you were designated, if you need help or have any questions)

· Weekly meetings with SOAR advisor (it would be beneficial for yourself as an intern to see how these weekly SOAR advisor meetings run — what’s discussed.)

· Weekly meetings with MC committee (attending weekly MC meetings)

· Weekly meetings with APISA (as MC coordinators we have to attend weekly Asian Pacific Islander Student Alliance meetings. so as an intern, you must attend these meetings with us. possibly even giving MC updates to APISA — what we did in the past week, what we plan to accomplish, how MC is doing, etc.)

· Must be able assist the MC coordinators to book lounges, food, transportation, venue, put together agenda, budget and funding. (it is important to understand that the role of MC cos is handle the logistic of the conference. as an intern you will assist the coordinators in booking various venues, transportation, filling out purchase orders, and working on the budget. when working on transportation you will be working with Phiton, when working on the budget you will be working with Sarah. it is perfectly fine if you have never even seen a purchase order before. that is what we, as coordinators, are here to help you with!)

· Being assessable and FLEXIBLE in time/schedule (being an MC coordinator takes up a lot of our time. and although you won’t be expected to spend as much time as the coordinators planning, your schedule must be able to fit weekly meetings with: APISA, MC, and SOAR advisor at the least. also consider that the intern will also have to do committee check-ins.)

· Respectful to everybody’s culture and heritage (i believe this is self explanatory)

· BE approachable (and smile! =D)

· Take initiative

· Non-defensive communication: validate, express yourself, offer a solution (we’re not looking for someone who is going to always say, “well, that won’t work because bleh bleh bleh” and not offer a solution. also, feel confident in what you say! if you don’t know why how to carve wood, it’s absolutely OKAY to say, “I don’t know [how].” also to keep in mind not to personalize issues when they come up. If you’re having trouble with something, let us know! unfortunately, we can’t read minds. and what we mean by “express yourself” is BE YOURSELF! =D)

In short:

The role of an MC intern is to shadow the current MC coordinators, as they handle the logistical work of the conference. The intern may possibly become a coordinator for MC(#). The MC intern will also assist the coordinators in booking venues, transportation, and keeping track of the budget.
